Please join us at our 1st Bi-Annual Scrabble Challenge fundraiser in February and help spread the word!
Where? Crosswinds Wesleyan Church 3660 Middle Cheshire Road, Canandaigua
When? Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Who? People of all ages are invited to participate in the fun! Businesses, clubs, and organizations, too.
Why? Scrabble is one of the most popular board games with roughly a third of American homes having a Scrabble set. It calls for some spelling ability in order to form words from a player’s seven randomly selected letters imprinted on tiles. Each letter has a different numerical value. Should a player’s seven tiles spell “reading,” for example, the numerical value would be nine points. The strategy is to increase points by placing the tiles on the Scrabble board squares where they can earn two or three times the value of those letters. Two to four players can play.
Since reading is the primary focus of the Community Reading Partnership and our mission is to promote family literacy practices throughout the community to improve the quality of life, we thought a Scrabble Challenge would be a great way to raise funds for our organization.
Can groups participate? Yes, of course! We encourage businesses, individuals, churches, service clubs, and other nonprofits to send a team to the Scrabble Challenge to represent their organizations.
Cost? Sponsoring a team of four will cost $100. Individuals may participate for a cost of $25. “Early word special” registration fees apply before Jan. 7, 2020: $90 for teams and $20 for individuals.
More: Copies of official Scrabble dictionaries will be available for reference at the Scrabble Challenge, along with light “brainy” snacks to keep competitors sharp. Three rounds will be played and one final winner will receive a grand prize. This fun event serves as CRP’s major fundraiser to support it’s core initiatives: Books for Newborns, Prescription to Read, Welcome to Kindergarten, and the Children’s Book Fest (coming in October 2020). CRP also maintains over 15 Little Red Book Shelves throughout the community where anyone at any age can obtain a gently used book.
We welcome the loan of Scrabble boards for this event. Scrabble Challenge registration forms are available at Wood Library or can be downloaded here or see below. Please send your check and name(s) of participants to Mary Ferris at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua, NY 14424.
